House Democratic leaders are taking direct action in a legal battle against the Trump administration, filing an amicus brief in support of a lawsuit aimed at stopping the dismantling of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). The brief, first shared with NBC News, argues that President Donald Trump’s attempt to shutter the CFPB creates significant harm for consumers, violates federal law, and undermines constitutional separation of powers.

Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee. Over 175 House Democrats have signed onto the brief, emphasizing the importance of consumer protection.
As Elon Musk makes headlines for his rapid changes within federal agencies, acting CFPB Director Russell Vought issued directives this month suspending much of the agency’s activities. The National Treasury Employees Union, which represents about 155,000 federal employees, has sued Vought over his actions, calling them unlawful. A hearing is scheduled for Monday on a motion to indefinitely pause the halt in CFPB activities.
Legal Strategies and the Future of Consumer Advocacy
The amicus brief is the first major effort by House Democrats’ newly established Litigation and Rapid Response Task Force. This initiative, launched by Jeffries, aims to counter the administration’s widespread efforts to reshape federal regulations. The task force has met multiple times, forming subgroups dedicated to legislation, litigation, oversight, and investigations.
“The leader created this task force as a central hub for developing creative strategies for us to ultimately respond to the litany of unlawful and unconstitutional actions,” Neguse told NBC News. “We still have a number of tools available to us, including the legal tool of being able to speak with one voice singularly in the litigation as these cases move through the federal courts.”
CFPB’s Role in Consumer Safety and Industry Regulations
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was created in 2010 following the financial crisis to protect consumers from predatory financial practices.
